Xanga Uploader Beta Test
Today we are beta testing the Xanga Uploader
With the addition of the many new photo features on Xanga, we decided it was time to make it easier for users to sync their collection of photos to their Xanga site. Enter Xanga Uploader, an installable desktop application that allows you to drag and drop photos, edit attributes such as title and tags, and with the click of a button, upload those photos to your Xanga Photo Manager. You’ll find Xanga Uploader works great for those situations when you want to drop photos from your latest vacation or party into Xanga.
Xanga Uploader is currently beta software. To make sure our software is top quality, we need your help in testing, and quality feedback. Feel free to post any bugs, problems, or just general ideas to http://help.xanga.com/contact/pictures.htm.
The Xanga Uploader requires Windows 2000 or Windows XP. If you would like Xanga Uploader for an operating system we currently don’t support, don’t be shy. Make sure you give us feedback so we can best serve you.

It states in your info section: “As we add more blocking and moderation tools to Xanga, we will consider lifting this [comment] restriction.”
I believe your team have done a terrific job with the upgrades. I would suggest that you go along with your plans to widen up viewership and interaction among non Xanga users. Please do not follow in the footsteps of MySpace. Blogspot allows none users to comment, however, their site is not as userfriendly as Xanga.
It is well known that many people on other blogs do not wish to sign on to Xanga.com because it limits interaction only among Xangians. And to be totally honest, most Xangians are individuals of age 18 and lower. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but don’t you think we should expand viewership and membership to more serious writers/bloggers?
Please consider my suggestion. I believe it will be a good thing for Xanga users, for their outside viewers, and also for the Xanga company itself. Let us grow bigger than MySpace which has gotten so much publicity, albeit bad publicity, but it is still news, and they have gotten sooo big. Now Rupert Murdoch is adding to its fame by attracting sponsors n advertisers. Let us try to be the number one Blog website. And for that to happen we need to expand interaction.
Why not create an option for individual xanga users to either close comments to outsiders or open….so there is no conflict between xangians who want privacy n those who dnt mind getting more exposure. I use mine as a portfolio for my writings and many others do to. So that pple from around the world can comment on issues they feel passionate about. I’m NOT an attention whore….but on worldly issues i write about, i def. like to hear wot pple have got to say. Many have sent emails stating they can’t leave comments, some thinking i deleted them.
Is this at all a possibility for Xanga staff? To create a function to close or open comments??? I am a subscribed user and do hope you take my suggestion into consideration. Thank u

Great idea. I haven’t liked very much that Xanga has done lately – pandering to the parents of mid-Amerika’s kids by playing nanny goody-two-shoes is bloody annoying for adults, but as KevKay says, your market is primarily under 18 and your target is to get the Myspace crowd who may not pay premium but at least you get to flash them endless adverts. (btw I thought paying Premium meant no ads, but it only seems to mean no ad on the main blog page, sad, but acceptable as I can block the others
).
The Footprints thing seems to be somewhat of a waste of time. All my regular flamers and loads of other people have their xtrackers etc installed to see whose on their sites and so avoid the Footprints by surfing surf ‘anonymously’ or with proxy servers.
EminemsRevenge says we should all take issue with John for blocking comments to his site so I’m doing it here. I wasn’t actually blocked and can’t think why anyone would, writing some un-pc words and curse words isn’t something that mid-Amerikan children aren’t unfamiliar with and he doesn’t espouse particularly controversial opinions, just uses big fonts
Anyway he wants us to take issue, so ISSUE.
Anyway, I do think your photo tools are really good and I think you should capitalise on it by linking up with CafePress or similar to offer said pics on merchandise through a Xanga-branded associate.
To end on a good note, I got nominated for best of Xanga on TheTheologiansCafe (whom I haven’t read but will have to now) and since I hardly ever blog, it must be on the strength of these endless comments I leave. Do you think this one will count

I love this new feature….it used to take me years to upload with the amount of pictures I post on my site, (even if it allowed 6 at a time)…But with this new feature, it makes it so much easier. Kudos!

Still waiting for non-xangan commenting to be set up as an option, though. You guys are doing great with all the changes lately, so I hate to be a pest, but I would really like for non-xangans to be able to leave comments. Other blogging sites like Blogger give you the option of allowing or blocking anonymous comments. I think such an option would be a vast improvement for Xanga!

What about Mac OSX?
This sounds like a good thing, but it’s not something I need or want.
I can say that about every upgrade that you’ve done except xanga lock, which is the dumbest idea I’ve ever heard of.
The thing that I object to with all these awful upgrades is that every time you upgrade, it makes xanga work a bit worse. In fact most of your upgrades have made it nearly impossible for me to use your site at all, at least for a little while. I have cancelled my premium subscription because xanga has become so useless.
But here’s something I would REALLY like: make it possible to post on your blogsite from a cell phone!
Blog Harbor has this, and in two weeks, I’m going to choose between the two blogsites, and at this point, it’s going to be Blog Harbor, even though they charge almost twice as much as you do.
It’s difficult to access my blog from a computer, and it’s impossible from my phone, and I’m tired of it.
Read a few blogsites. I read them, and about once a month for a week, every blog I read says something like “I couldn’t post to my blog yesterday. Xanga must’ve upgraded something again.” Then, they usually complain about it for a while. There are also random comments almost continuously saying things like, “Well, here’s the URL. Sorry I couldn’t make it a link, but xanga’s not doing that today.” and, “I wanted to post a photo, but xanga won’t let me.”
We’re all tired of it!

Easy Idea. Allow us access to an FTP server, that way people running the BSDs, Macs, and yucky Linux distrobutions can partake.
Most FTP servers can be configured to only accept certain types of files (jpegs, etc.). I know Google base allows users to upload “items” via ftp. If there is a security problem there, why not sftp?
Just a thought.

Perhaps the next step would be to allow for a ‘quick-pic’ upload from a cell phone. Give users a certain number in the user control panel which they could send a pix-message to and have it automatically go into a side panel or as a new blog entry or something. That would rock!

Upload photos in general has been DOA since Sunday AM.
I keep getting an error message: “The page isn’t redirecting properly. Firefox has detected that the server is redirecting the request for this address in a way that will never complete. *This problem can sometimes be caused by disabling or refusing to accept cookies.” I have NOT disabled cookies.
Even worse, several of my photos–ones I uploaded months or years ago–appear to have been eaten, as well. The file name is still there, but the photo itself is gone. They’re not “broken” files; they’re appearing just as white space. What gives?! Can I have my photos back?

All this feedback has been great everybody! Here are some answers to some of your questions:
Mac OS X support: Better Mac support is in the big list of things we have planned. It’s just a matter of getting through that list.
In response to sXebassplayr: Yes, you can save the previous 3 years you had.
FTP space for transfers: we don’t have anything like that planned at this time.
MarkLupton: Many people find uploading 20 or more photos at a time to be very tedious/difficult. Two and a half months for one programmer isn’t that much work for something so many people have requested needs improvement.
API: We are considering it at this time.

I think that it’s important to support Mac OS X. Keep in mind that while most computers overall may well be running Windows, a much larger % of individual users are using Macs. I think you are alienating a large number of users when you create features only available to Windows users.

you may hate me for this, but i have xanga and myspace. to tell you the truth, the major benefits of myspace over xanga are simply that 1. you can send messages to people so that only they can see them, 2. the profile section is much more interesting and simply has a better layout; whereas the benefits to xanga are 1. the blog portion is viewable immediately as opposed to having to click somewhere and 2. anyone can comment instead of them having to be your “friend” beforehand.
these are only my opinions, maybe they will help, maybe not.
anyway, this uploader sounds like a great idea.
okay, i downloaded it and, i like it-its helpful. it would be MUCH more helpful, however, if you could somehow, if at all possible, make it so you didn’t have to do one picture at a time, you could select, shift, drag and drop, saving TONS of time. just a thought. good work anyway.

I found that you need to include an “Album” selection in the upload process. I just uploaded tons of pics, was able to “tag” them, but now I have to go back and enter them all in an album.
